Repairing Your Garage Door

Garage doors operate with the tension of the springs. This means they can swing in sections or shift up and down in one piece. The main part is the door. It moves with the help of metal tracks attached to the walls of the garage. The springs provide the power to move it. Generally, garage doors work in an easy way, making garage door repairs rather simple.

With our 8 years of experience in garage door repairs, we have learned the correct way to do it. If you would like to learn how to repair your garage door we will give you helpful tips, and guide you step by step.

Step 1: Check the metal tracks attached to the walls of your garage. The mounting brackets hold the tracks to the walls. If the tracks are loose, tighten the bolts or screws of the brackets. Examine the tracks for dents, crimps, or flat spots. If you find any damaged spot, use a scrap of wood and a hammer with a rubber head to pound them. If the tracks are severely damaged, you must replace the tracks, or have a garage door repair service do it for you.

Step 2: Check the alignment of the track with a level tool. Horizontal tracks should be facing slightly downward to the back of the garage. Vertical sections of the tracks should be exactly aligned. Both tracks must be at the same height on the garage walls. Tracks may not be properly aligned. If so, you should loose the screws holding the mounting rack. Tap the tracks carefully. Recheck the tracks with the level tool to make sure they are in the right position. Tight back the bolts or screws of the mounting brackets.

Step 3: Clean the tracks. Use a concentrated household cleaner to remove dirt and hardened grease. Clean the rollers, and dry both tracks and rollers with a towel.

On swing-up doors, check the plates used to mount the springs. Make sure all the screws are tight. On roll-up doors, check the hinges that hold the sections of the door together. Again, tighten any loose screws, and replace any damaged hinges. If one side of the door is sagging, make corrections by servicing the hinges. If a screw hole is larger than the screw itself, replace the screw with a longer one of the same diameter. Use a hollow fiber plug dipped in carpenters' glue with the new screw. If you find cracked wood at a hinge, remove the hinge and fill the cracks and the screw holes with wood filler. Let the filler dry and then replace the hinge. If possible, move the hinge onto solid wood.

Important tip: Garage doors may only have one torsion spring. Do not try to repair it yourself, especially if its located at the center of the door. The spring holds a lot of tension and you could injure yourself. For garage doors with this type of springs, you can call us and we will assist you immediately.
